Where Is the Best Place to Do Your PADI IDC in Bali?

The best place to do your PADI IDC in Bali depends on the kind of diving you want to teach afterwards. Nusa Penida suits candidates who want to train in current and around manta rays. Sanur suits those who want the shortest transfer from the airport. Amed and Tulamben suit those who want shore diving and a quiet village base. The Gili Islands suit those who want a large candidate community, although they belong to Lombok and sit outside Bali.

The PADI Instructor rating, the PADI standards and the PADI fees are identical in all four. What changes is the water you train in, the length of the transfer and the course fee, which ran from IDR 20 million to IDR 25 million on published Bali price lists in October 2026.

Which Bali IDC Location Suits Which Candidate?

LocationFrom Bali airportOpen-water trainingBest forTake a Note
Nusa PenidaAbout 30 minutes by road to Sanur, then about 45 minutes by fast boatBoat dives in current, manta rays all year, water that can drop to 16°C in the dry season and sits at 26 to 28°C in the rainy seasonCandidates heading for drift and big-animal destinationsIsland logistics: bring cash and pack for cold water during July till September
SanurAbout 30 minutes by roadTown base on the southeast coast. Fast boats to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan leave from hereCandidates short on timeManta and mola sites are a boat crossing away
Amed and Tulamben2.5 to 3 hours by roadMostly shore entries over black volcanic sand, with walls, wrecks and macroCandidates who want repeatable shore dives and a village paceThe longest road transfer of the three Bali options
Gili Islands (Lombok)About 1.5 hours by road to Padang Bai, then about 2.5 hours by fast boatBoat dives, visibility commonly 15 to 30 m, turtles commonCandidates who want a big candidate community and an island with no motor trafficOutside Bali, so the crossing takes most of an arrival or departure day

Travel times are typical figures. Fast boat crossings depend on the operator and the sea.

How Do the Four Locations Compare in Practice?

Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is the option for candidates who want their teaching habits formed in moving water. The dive sites sit inside the Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area, 10 to 30 minutes by boat from the dive centre. Manta rays are seen all year, mola mola are seasonal, and dry-season upwellings can drop the water to 16°C.

For a new instructor, that means briefing for current, managing a group on a drift and planning around a thermocline before the first job interview. Candidates who plan to work in other current-driven destinations arrive with that experience already logged.

The island is about 45 minutes by fast boat from Sanur. Legend Diving Penida is based at Ped on the north coast and runs the PADI IDC course in Nusa Penida. The course page covers the structure, schedule and entry checklist, so they are not repeated here.

Sanur

Sanur is the closest IDC base to the airport, about a 30-minute drive, on Bali's southeast coast. It is also the departure point for the fast boats to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan.

A Sanur candidate can still dive Nusa Penida, with a crossing each way. A Nusa Penida day trip from Sanur, for example, starts with a 6:00 am harbour meeting and returns at 6:00 pm. Sanur fits candidates who have little time around the course and want to stay close to the airport.

Amed and Tulamben

Amed is a 14 km strip of villages on the northeast coast, 2.5 to 3 hours by car from the airport. Most sites are reached from the shore, over black volcanic sand from Mount Agung. Tulamben, 12 km to the northwest, has the USAT Liberty wreck, which lies about 40 m from the beach in 5 to 30 m of water.

Shore access makes it simple to return to the same site, which helps when you are practising one teaching presentation several times. The trade-off is distance from the airport and from the manta sites of Nusa Penida.

Gili Islands

Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno lie off the northwest tip of Lombok, in a different province from Bali. They appear in most Bali comparisons because many candidates fly into Bali and choose between the two.

Fast boats from Padang Bai take about 2.5 hours, and there is no motorised transport on the islands. Visibility is commonly 15 to 30 m, turtles are common and currents can be strong. Several centres on Gili Trawangan run IDCs through the year, with published 2026 course fees of USD 1,600.

What Should You Ask a Centre Before You Book?

PADI advises candidates to compare IDC centres on schedule, Course Director, group size, job support and price. These five questions cover that advice and one point it leaves out, the exam location.

  • Who is the Course Director, and how many candidates will be in the group?
  • How many days does the programme run, including preparation days?
  • Where will the Instructor Examination be held, and is travel to it included?
  • Which PADI fees and materials sit outside the course price?
  • What help is offered with job placement after the exam?

How Much Does a PADI IDC in Bali Cost in Total?

A PADI IDC at Legend Diving Penida comes to about IDR 57 million to IDR 59 million, or about USD 3.200, once PADI materials and exam fees are added to the IDR 20.000.000 course fee. That total leaves out accommodation, food, visa and flights.

CostAmountPaid to
IDC course feeIDR 20,000,000Legend Diving Penida
IDC Crew Pack, eLearning and EFR Instructor materialsAbout IDR 15 million to IDR 16.5 millionDive centre or PADI
PADI Instructor ExaminationAUD 1,190 (about IDR 14.8 million)PADI
PADI instructor application and first-year membershipAUD 592 to AUD 602 (about IDR 7.4 million to IDR 7.5 million)PADI
Total before living costsAbout IDR 57 million to IDR 59 million

How to read these figures:

  • The course fee is taken from the Legend Diving Penida price list, which is the reference for current prices.
  • The materials figure is the range published by two other Bali IDC centres in October 2026. Use it as a guide and confirm the amount when you book.
  • The PADI fees are the 2026 amounts quoted by IDC centres in Indonesia. PADI bills them in Australian dollars and they change over time, so check the current amounts with your Course Director before you transfer money.
  • Conversions use 1 AUD = IDR 12,435 and 1 USD = IDR 17,900, the rates of 4 October 2026.

The PADI fees are the same wherever you take the course. Course fees differ. Published 2026 prices were IDR 20 million to IDR 21.5 million on Nusa Penida, IDR 25 million for a 20-day programme in Sanur, and USD 1,600 (about IDR 28.6 million) on Gili Trawangan. The Amed centres checked for this article did not list a price online.

Programme length runs from about two to three weeks depending on the centre, so the number of nights you pay for changes with the programme you choose. Budget separately for accommodation, food, visa, flights and insurance.

How Long Does It Take to Go From Open Water Diver to Instructor?

The fastest route from non-diver to PADI Instructor is about six months, because PADI requires six months as a certified diver before you enrol in an IDC. A certified Divemaster who already has 100 logged dives needs about three weeks: the IDC with its preparation days, then the two-day Instructor Examination.

StagePADI minimumTypical time
Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, EFREach certification unlocks the nextAbout 8 to 9 course days
Divemaster18 years old, 40 logged dives to start, 60 to certify4 to 8 weeks at Legend Diving Penida, depending on your starting level
Waiting period and dive countCertified diver for 6 months, 60 logged dives to enrol in the IDC, 100 to sit the examDepends on when you first certified
IDCDivemaster, first aid and CPR training within 24 months, medical statement within 12 monthsAbout two to three weeks including preparation
Instructor ExaminationRun by PADI examiners after the IDC2 days

Time spent as a Divemaster does double duty: it builds the dive count and covers the six-month wait. Individual centres can set a higher entry bar than the PADI minimum, so read the entry checklist on the course page before you fix dates.

What Does the PADI Instructor Rating Let You Do?

Passing the Instructor Examination makes you a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI). The rating is the same wherever you earned it. According to PADI, an OWSI can teach:

  • The core courses: Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver and Divemaster
  • Kids scuba programmes
  • Three of the six conservation specialty courses
  • First aid and CPR courses

The next rating is Master Scuba Diver Trainer. It requires five PADI Specialty Instructor certifications and at least 25 PADI certifications issued to students. Beyond that come IDC Staff Instructor, Master Instructor and Course Director, the level that teaches the IDC itself.

This is where the training location matters again. The sites you trained on are the conditions you can say you have taught in. An instructor who trained in current and one who trained on sheltered shore dives hold the same card and start with different first jobs in reach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the PADI Instructor certification different depending on where in Bali you take the IDC?

No. Every IDC follows the same PADI standards and ends with the same two-day Instructor Examination. The location changes your training conditions, your group, your transfer and your costs.

Are the Gili Islands part of Bali?

No. Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno lie off the northwest tip of Lombok. From Bali, the usual route is a fast boat from Padang Bai, which takes about 2.5 hours.

How much are the PADI fees on top of the IDC course price?

In 2026, IDC centres in Indonesia quote AUD 1,190 for the Instructor Examination and AUD 592 to AUD 602 for the instructor application and first-year membership. Materials are extra. PADI charges these fees to every candidate, whichever centre you choose.

Which Bali location is cheapest for an IDC?

The PADI fees are fixed, so the difference comes from the course fee and your living costs. Published 2026 course fees were IDR 20 million to IDR 25 million in Bali and USD 1,600 on Gili Trawangan. Compare what each price includes and how many days the programme runs before you compare totals.

Can you go from non-diver to instructor in one trip to Bali?

Only on a stay of six months or more. PADI requires six months as a certified diver before the IDC and 100 logged dives before the exam. Candidates either split the path into two trips or stay on as a Divemaster in between.

Do you have to do your Divemaster at the same centre as your IDC?

No. PADI accepts a PADI Divemaster certification, or an equivalent leadership-level rating, from any centre. Doing both in one place saves a move, and the team already knows your diving when the IDC starts.

Final Thoughts

The best place to do a PADI IDC in Bali is the one whose water matches the job you want afterwards. Choose Nusa Penida for current, cold upwellings and manta rays. Choose Sanur for the shortest transfer, Amed and Tulamben for shore diving, and the Gili Islands for a large candidate community outside Bali.

The rating and the PADI fees are the same in each. Decide on the conditions you want to learn to teach in, then compare what each course fee includes and how long the programme runs.
